Being primarily a technology focussed company, with requisite
physical and human resources, ASL has been undertaking
development projects both on behalf of its customers,
as also for internal research and development. The projects
comprise advanced electronic hardware, embedded software
and application software.
The specific development projects executed by ASL for
different customers in the recent past are listed here:

| Low
Frequency Analysis & Ranging |
|
Sonars
use low frequencies for under-water radio wave communication
and detection. As the radio waves propagate in water,
they get affected by the obstacles in the medium. In the
project, the low frequency sonar data stream was transferred
first to a hard disc. Subsequent signature analysis is
carried out to determine the characteristics of the obstacles.
The hardware unit was implemented on Xilinx FPGA platform. |

| GPS
based Time/Frequency Synchronisation |
|
| As
a by-product from the GPS, the data output contains very
accurate time information. This information can be usefully
utilised to synchronize distributed networks in the Information
Technology, Telecom and Power sectors of Industry. Under
the project, the time information is extracted from the
GPS data strings, and is converted to IRIG-B format suitable
for binary time signals. The implementation is done on
Altera FPGA platform and embedded soft processor NIOS.
Following additional interfaces are provided for network
time synchronisation, eternal display, etc.: |

As
another one of the applications of GPS derived time, a
GPS based clock was designed to provide accurate time
in an autonomous mode by synchronising with NavStar constellation
of GPS satellites. ASL GeoTime
2511 is the product developed as a low cost solution
to accurate timing when compared to the conventionally
used Atomic Clocks in scientific or industrial applications.
GeoTime 2511
can work both as a Master clock or a Master driving several
Slave clock displays meeting the requirements of a host
of users like Airports, Hospitals, Industrial Plants,
TV/Radio Broadcasters, Security Agencies, etc. |

Mode-S
Interrogator for IFF
The project involved designing a Mode-S add on hardware
compatible with Interrogate Friend or Foe (IFF) Mk-X
system for a ground based radar. The design enables
to track 16 different targets with selective interrogation.
It is based on Intel processor with FPGA based design. |

| Fleet
Managment System |
|
As
a superset of the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS)
built by ASL, a fleet management application is targeted
towards large fleet operators who need to monitor, control
and plan the despatch of their fleet deployed countrywide.
As a consequence, the application will permit optimisation
on the performance of their fleet, resulting in trip cycle
time improvements, better utilisation of resources, fuel
saving and safety of fleet. In actual operation, the movements
of vehicles are tracked in real time against the background
of a map of the geographical area, and logged in the database
for off-line analysis.
As an option, the application can be offered as a subscribed
service to the fleet operators who can get data on their
vehicles by logging on the service provider's website
over the Internet.
Two specific applications have been built at ASL and solutions
offered. |

Ambulance
Monitoring & Maintenance Application (AMMA) |
|
| |
AMMA
is a software application developed for use by the Ambulances
belonging to Hospitals or other Health Care service providers
which can be deployed to provide pre-hospital care to
accident and emergency victims.
AMMA version 1.0.0 combines geographic map information
with the data from GPS based vehicle tracking unit (ASL
GeoPoint 2407)
installed in the Ambulance, and presents the same on a
user Control Station using proprietary Radio and GeoConnect
communication software. The application offers several
user-friendly features including patient, hospital, caller
information, secure vehicle registration, land marks on
map, etc. |

Transport
Mangement Application
(TMA) |
|
|

TMA
presents comprehensive planning, simulation and monitoring
environment that combines geographic map information with
data from GPS based vehicle tracking unit (ASL GeoPoint
2407) installed in the road vehicles to enable their
effective monitoring, despatch and optimised utilisation.
Interface with Proximity/RF ID sensors is provided to
enable monitoring personnel attendance in the vehicle
or status of assets. Several user-friendly features are
built into the application like route planning, monitor
stoppage & over-speeding, driver & personnel IDs, vehicle
allocation, etc. to address requirements of Call Centres,
Asset Management, Traffic Monitoring, etc. |

| GPS/INS
Integration |
|
This
project involved the modeling and simulation of both the
Inertial Navigation System (INS) / Inertial Measurement
Unit (IMU) and GPS using Matlab and Simulink. Errors were
reduced using a 18 stage Kalman Filter. The GPS/INS unit
was implemented and Hardware-in-the-loop testing was done. |

| High
Dynamics GPS |
|
For
certain airborne applications, for effective and accurate
navigation, it is required to have a GPS position update
rate higher than a commonly available 1 sec - data rate
of 1 Hz. In this project, the embedded software of a proprietary
GPS chipset with its system software was modified to provide
position updates every 100 msec - data rate of 10 Hz.
Flight simulation using this hardware was also successfully
carried out. |

A
version of this was designed using a PDA on WinCE platform.
Another version is designed using simputer on linux platform
as a part of AMIDA affiliation program. |
